The tennis world has been debating over equal pay between men and women. While this has been implemented in some of the tournaments, it has yet to fully start in the sport.
The players are also fine with this, but recently Australian Nick Kyrgios shared his thoughts on this and revealed that he is strongly against this decision.
In an interview on The Athletic, he used his peer Elina Svitolina’s name as a comparison to prove his point. The 28-year-old highlights the fact that men play hours longer than women do, and it is unfair for equal pay. While only the US Open has implemented this for a long time, other tournaments are also looking to follow suit.
If we’re merging, you merge the draws, you merge everything, But why is tennis the only sport that deals with this stuff? If the WNBA said, ‘Let’s merge’, the NBA would ridicule them.Said Kyrgios on the Athletic.
The Australian also took shots at the ATP and WTA for the idea of merging the tours. He laughs at that idea, which may be implemented in the future, and reckons that if the WNBA suggested merging, then it would be laughed at by the world and the NBA itself.
While many reckon it is a good idea to merge the two draws, the Australian thinks otherwise.
After pulling out from the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios revealed his intentions of not wanting to play tennis anymore
Nick Kyrgios, one of the most animated players in the sport, has pulled out of the Australian Open due to his recurring injuries. He had undergone knee and wrist surgeries that kept him out of the game for almost a year.
A few days after he decided to pull out of his home tournament, the 28-year-old revealed a few of his deep thoughts during an interview. He revealed how he worked hard to come out of depression and gave a few tips for people who are struggling with the same.
During the interview, he opened up about his intentions to not even pick up his racquet ever again, contemplating retirement. He is only continuing to play for the fans and family who have supported him throughout his career.
Ever since his emotional 2019 Wimbledon loss against Novak Djokovic, the Australian has not been able to replicate the same kind of performance, dropping his ranking.
With the future unclear, the 28-year-old doesn’t have any answers ready for his comeback but has assured that he will play tennis to feed his family.
