Nick Kyrgios fires back at Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mom who accused the Australian of provoking son with “dirty tennis”
Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas
Australia’s No.1 singles player Nick Krygios has responded to rival Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ mother who recently claimed that her son would have won had he not resorted to the dirty comment tactics that the Australian used in their third-round Wimbledon clash this year.
Asked about her son’s season so far, Julia Apostoli, speaking with Champion AT, had recently said, “Could have played better, of course. Our match turned out to be very nervous with Nick Kyrgios. That is, we were practically offered to play dirty tennis there, but we don’t know how to play such tennis. Therefore, Styopa lost his temper and left the court without getting there.“
Kyrgios did not directly respond to Apostoli’s comments but his recent caption under a video he shared on his Instagram from the match with Tsitsipas seems to be hitting close. “Dirty tennis,” Kyrgios captioned the video in an obvious sarcasm to how good the level of play was during that encounter in general.
Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mom also doesn’t “admire” Roger Federer
Apostoli also recently opened up on Roger Federer‘s retirement. Tsitsipas was part of Team Europe in the Laver Cup where Federer retired from professional tennis.
“I understand that not everyone should and, most importantly, can like him. I understand it. But there is no need to discourage yourself either. We must still adhere to some moral principles: do not swear, do not show your excessive dissatisfaction, and maybe even disgust for the coach,” said Tsitsipas’ mother speaking with Russian outlet Champion AT.
However, Tsitsipas himself has always maintained that he grew up watching the Swiss Maestro and is a fan of his. They first faced off in the Australian Open 2019 R16 when the Greek defeated Federer in 4 sets. Their head 2 head is 2-2.
Tsitsipas is one of the few flag bearers of single-handed backhands which was one of the most artistic aspects of Federer’s game. Though many tennis experts routinely point out the vulnerable aspects of playing with a single-handed backhand, many still admire it for its raw beauty.
Currently the World No.5, Tsitsipas has had a mixed year so far. He played 67 matches this year (49 wins, 18 losses) and won 2 titles (Monte Carlo ATP 1000, Mallorca ATP250) but failed to perform his best in the Grand Slam tournaments. His best run was at the semi-final at the Australian Open where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in 4 sets.
