Nick Kyrgios’ manager counters Lleyton Hewitt’s allegations over injury withdrawal from the United Cup

Nick Kyrgios vs Lleyton Hewitt

Nick Kyrgios‘ manager hits back at Lleyton Hewitt after the allegations made against Nick about his late withdrawal from the United Cup. Earlier, the Australian team captain, Lleyton Hewitt, accused Nick of a lack of communication. Nick stated that the injury was to his ankle and that he cannot risk his leg for the upcoming Australian Open 2023.

Hewitt was not okay with this decision, as he felt a little prior intimation to the team would be nice. This late withdrawal brought Alex De Minaur into top-seeded matches, which he was not prepared for. However, he backed his young bloke saying Alex wouldn’t make any excuses for these changes in the 11th hour. Speaking about Nick, Hewitt said, “I’m so proud of this bloke and the effort and how he makes playing for his country a priority.”

He continued saying, “To have (the change) thrown on him yesterday wasn’t easy. He’s got to play two lefties now, where he was planning on playing two righties. It is completely different. But he’s not going to make excuses, that’s for sure.”

He stated that, despite being the team captain, he knew about Nick’s withdrawal at the same time as his teammates. He also said “For the whole team, it was pretty tough not knowing what was going on the last 24 hours. It was more probably the lack of communication,”

“If it was just worrying Nick, that’s one thing, but when it revolves around the team and other people and I guess their preparation … they want to be playing as well as they can not just in this event but also leading into the Australian Open. That’s probably the hardest thing.” Hewitt said.

Nick Kyrgios and his manager open up

Nick Kyrgios’ manager, Daniel Horsfall speaking to The Age said, “We are very excited and working every day to make sure we’re ready for the Australian Open. A lot of people were upset after he pulled out of the United Cup, but I hope they now realize the injury is genuine. I wish more people would ask questions before putting in their two cents.”

Nick is supposed to play in a lead-up tournament in Adelaide before going into the Australian Open. But due to his ankle injury, the world No.22 has withdrawn from the tournament.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Nick Kyrgios said, “Anyone who plays professionally knows, for sure, “Anyone outside of that wouldn’t have a great understanding. Going deep or not, winning a match at a grand slam level is not an easy task. People underestimate the pressure and the nerves with being a part of one of the biggest tournaments of the year. Throw in an injury and knowing you didn’t give yourself the best chance only adds to the mountain of pressure you face. So feeling good physically is important.”
