The investments in sports from Saudi Arabia are spanning globally. After football and golf, tennis is on the country’s radar to welcome players for Tour events. Lately, there have been discussions held between ATP and WTA for a possible deal with the nation which has not met with positive reactions from all players. Amidst this, Nick Kyrgios showed his full support for the potential move whereas Daria Kasatkina displayed her disapproval.

Kasatkina, hailing from Russia has been in the news for publicly criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She later came out as a lesbian which made her return to the homophobic Russia difficult. Kyrgios had backed the deal saying the players will finally earn what they deserve with big investments from Saudi. Kasatkina called out the Aussie over his comments and talked about the issue of women’s safety in the nation and also the country’s acceptance of the LGBT community.

Kyrgios is not a man to stay silent after being targeted and he came out with a reply. Replying to a tweet, Kyrgios said, “My girlfriend felt fine there.” The reply comes days after Kasatkina’s comment as Kyrgios was off his Twitter account ever since announcing his withdrawal from this year’s Wimbledon.

While the deal between Saudi Arabia and tennis organisations isn’t finalised, the chances are quite good. With the WTA announcing their aim of matching ATP’s prize money by 2027 at the 500 and 1000 events, the investment from the nation will surely help them in their financial planning.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar re-emphasised the issue of ‘sportswashing’ to the globe. With the LIV Golf Tour also earning some bucks from the nation, tennis fans fear Saudi Arabia is attempting a similar thing by investing in tennis. Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek have both made their stance clear on whether they will play in Saudi.

While official decision remains to come, Nick Kyrgios was asked by fans to reconsider his stance. Human rights issues, freedom to women, acceptance of the LGBT community and other issues are linked with the nation and not many tennis enthusiasts are ready to see the Tour move to the country.

With both ATP and WTA making u-turns on their decision to play in China after Peng Shuai’s scandal, it won’t be a surprise if they do go to Saudi Arabia. With players turning up to the nation for exhibition events anyway in the season break, its highly unlikely that players will unite to oppose the decision.
