Nick Kyrgios, one of the best Australian players in the recent era, was featured on the Jay Shetty podcast, where he opened up about his dark times and how he came back from a dark place to be where he is right now.
For context, the 28-year-old has been suffering from recurring knee and wrist injuries that have put him out of the game for the majority of the year. However, the Australian star pulled out of his home Grand Slam due to these injuries and also reckons that he has contemplated retirement during those difficult times of surgery. This knee surgery has made it difficult for Kyrgios to even walk, making him reconsider his retirement option.
If it was up to me, I don’t really want to play any more, to be honest. But I have to, almost. I have so much more to give. I was so close [to winning Wimbledon in 2022] and I don’t even really love the sport, I’m only doing this because I love taking care of my family and my people. I’m tired.Said the Australian on the podcast
Kyrgios further hinted at never picking up his racquet again in his ideal world and just wanting a family, but as reality hits, the Australian says that despite all the thought, he wants to play again to provide for the family and take care of them.
I have had three surgeries now. I’m only 28 years old, I always wanted to have a family and not be in pain. When I get up, I can’t walk without pain. It’s a tough gig.He further added:
The support that the fans have shown him is the fuel for the Australian to get back on the court and give it back to the fans who have stood beside him, cheering him along the way.
Nick Kyrgios unfolds the reasons for overcoming such difficult times in his life
7-time ATP title winner Nick Kyrgios has always been an animated character, both on and off the court. In the recent podcast episode, Kyrgios opens up about his dark times and how he won the battle with himself.
He revealed that his fans, family, and close friends are the main reason for him to come out of the dark phase and pick up a racquet again.
He also compared himself with the tennis great Novak Djokovic and was proud that he was able to reach his level without being completely professional towards the sport in terms of diet and fitness.
The Australian thinks that this can motivate and inspire people, and becoming a role model for others keeps him from retiring and continuing playing the sport.
He also talked about not thinking about the past and living in the present, appreciating every moment. “Everything is a bonus,” said the Australian, who is appreciative of his life post-dark times.
