Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is no stranger to controversies, ridiculous claims, or a bit of both on social media. This time, Nick shared an image on Twitter to highlight his superior stats on the court, something that has made him the subject of ridicule on the platform lately. Notably, Nick Kyrgios has been off the court for the majority of the season this year owing to various injuries.
In the tweet, Nick showed an image of tennis statistics, which shows that he leads the tour in-service performance and points won under pressure. He captioned it, “Lemme remind you before you open your mouth” in his usual demeanor.
While an impressive feat, this by itself does nothing much to bring laurels to a player’s career; a lot more goes into having a successful tennis career than dominating on performance statistics. Most fans and tennis pundits will argue that a balance between all important tennis skills is required to achieve success on tour.
For example, while Kyrgios is amongst the top players with the best service and performance under pressure, he does not feature on the list of the best returners on tour. Interestingly, Novak Djokovic is the only player who features on the leaderboard in all three departments.
Fans berate Nick Kyrgios for boasting about stats
Tennis fans took to Twitter to ridicule the famously mercurial player, who at this point is more normalized to being in controversies than off them. They believe that while leading in stats on the tour in any department is quite the feat; it does little to bring you success in terms of titles or rankings.
Some argued that, given enough time, people will forget all about a player’s numbers and would only recall his/her singular achievements, such as title wins, or Grand Slam runs.
The collective opinion of the fans dictates that numbers won’t help Nick write his legacy on the tennis tour. For that, he will have to get back on court healthy and once again be in contention for big titles. Given his sheer talent, that is not too far-fetched a claim to make.
Nick has spent most of the year this season recuperating from injuries. His last match was a first-round loss during the Stuttgart Open. It remains to be seen where the Australian will finally make his comeback on the tour.
