Nick Kyrgios’ season comes to an anti-climatic end as the Australian withdraws from the 2022 Paris Masters

World No. 21 Nick Kyrgios is possibly out for the season as the Australian withdrew his name from the upcoming 2022 Paris Masters. Kyrgios’ withdrawal is due to a recurring knee injury that had also seen him withdraw from the 2022 Japan Open mid-way through the tournament.

Along with his confirmed absence from the event in Bercy, Kyrgios is also out from the ATP-500 Basel Open scheduled next week. With injury becoming a consistent issue for the Australian, it’s safe to say that the Australian won’t be playing again this season unless he shows up for the exhibition events.

Kyrgios had a possible outside chance to qualify for the 2022 ATP Finals but with the two withdrawals, he is out of the race as well. With 3 spots still to be filled at the Year-end Championships, had Kyrgios won the titles in Basel and Paris, he could have qualified for Turin but unfortunately misses out on the chance.

Kyrgios started the season ranked outside the Top-100. A bout with Covid-19 delayed the start of the season for him as he made his season debut at the 2022 Australian Open. While he made a second-round exit in the singles losing to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev, Kyrgios won the doubles title with childhood buddy Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The Australian Open doubles finals was the first time Kyrgios reached a major final and was successful in winning it. Kyrgios remained absent from the Tour till March before returning for the hardcourt swing in the USA where he made the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and the pre-quarters in Miami.

Kyrgios’ tantrums were on display during the two events as he paid big fines for on-court antics. The clay tournament in Houston was his only appearance on the surface although he did manage to reach the semi-finals. Kyrgios then played directly on the Grass season in what was a big grass season for him.

He reached the semis in Stuttgart and Halle but was handed a walkover in Mallorca to stay fresh for Wimbledon. At the Championships, he made his way to his first-ever Grand Slam singles finals but lost to Novak Djokovic in 4-sets earning the runners-up trophy and starting a ‘bromance’ with the Serb.

He did not play in July again before returning for the US Open leg series where he won the 2022 Washington Open ending his 3-year drought of a Tour title. He reached the quarter-finals in Canada and then at the 2022 US Open but couldn’t add another title to his tally.

With some brilliant performances this season, it’s a sorry ending for Kyrgios as he is taken out by injuries. However, it gives fans hopes that realising his true potential this year, the Australian will be back with better performances next season.
