Alexander Zverev registered a sensational win over Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Australian Open to qualify for the semifinals, where he will now face Daniil Medvedev.

Being the second seed in the tournament, Carlos Alcaraz was one of the favorites to lift the trophy this season, and thus this is indeed a major achievement for Zverev. He has had a good record against the Spaniard in the recent past.

Ahead of the match, not many were confident in the German, and a great example can be seen on Nick Kyrgios’ Twitter account. After Zverev’s win, Nick Kyrgios gave a fitting reply to a fan who was criticizing one of Zverev’s plays during the quarterfinal match.

The Australian player was delighted as the German won, being the underdog in the match, and did not leave the opportunity to troll one of his trolls.

You can actually see the pieces slowly falling away for Alexander Zverev. It's such an obvious example of a player thinking the job is done when it isn't and it is FASCINATING.
The fan had tweeted.

Zverev has done the job of silencing his doubters pretty well after defeating the World No. 2. Talking about the match, Zverev never really seemed to struggle. He won the first two rounds with ease. The Spaniard tried to make a comeback by winning the third set but Zverev ended up winning the match in four sets not long after that.

The matchup between these two players was something that fans saw very frequently in 2023. In fact, they played against each other a total of six times last year.

Out of the six matches that they played in 2023, Daniil Medvedev won five times while Zverev won only once. They last faced in the group stage of the 2023 ATP Finals. Zverev’s only win against the Russian last year came in the round of 16 of the Cincinnati Masters. Thus, the stats favor Daniil Medvedev and he is the favorite to win this match.
