Nick Kyrgios humbled down Youtuber turned boxer, Jake Paul, in a recent X comment. Kyrgios is someone who is known for his gritty remarks as much as he is known for his tennis. In a new development, his honest and no-filter nature was directed towards Paul.
Jake Paul started off his career through a video app called Vine. Eventually, he grew massive on YouTube with his daily vlogs and now he is a professional boxer. Talking about one of his matches where he fought Tommy Fury in ‘Full Send Podcast‘, he revealed how he was consumed into alcoholism weeks before the ‘D-Day’.
Jake said, “I knew I wasn’t focused going into the Tommy fight. I was drinking 7 weeks before and I was like what the f**k am I doing?”
In the video, Jake stated the reason why he is talking about it in public, even when it all might sound ‘st*pid‘. He reasoned how he does not want anyone else to do the same thing, and so that people can learn from his mistakes, as he eventually lost the match.
This video was posted on X by a sports news page called ‘Happy Punch‘. Commenting below the video, Kyrgios says, “I’ve drunk the night before Nadal on centre court Wimbledon. It’s all good (laughing emoticon). I lost but you’d be surprised how many athletes are in the club whilst playing.” Krygios’ intention seemed like he was trying to tell Jake how normal it is for athletes to consume substances just before a match, and Jake is not the only one doing it.
The time when Kyrgios got drunk hours before playing Rafael Nadal
So what was the incident that Kyrgios is talking about here? During the 2019 Wimbledon, it was reported that Kyrgios had been seen drinking and chatting with girls in a local Wimbledon pub post 11 p.m. Several fans and journalists alleged that they saw the Aussie at the ‘Dog & Fox Club’ which is 15 minutes away from the All England Lawn Tennis Club. The more interesting aspect was, that Kyrgios had to play against Rafael Nadal just the next day on the Centre Court.
3 years later, Kyrgios revealed this memory in a post-match conference at 2022 Wimbledon. Nick shared his fight with substance abuse and talked about the days when he would drink the entire night even before important matches and, more than often, had to be pulled out of the club by his team.
“There was a time where I was having to be forced out of a pub at 4am to play Nadal second round. My agent had to come get me out of a pub at 4am before I played my match on Centre Court at Wimbledon. I’ve come a long way, that’s for sure,” the Australian had said then.
Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final that year but ultimately lost to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic.
