Over the years, in the sport of tennis, classy forehands, smart backhands, and heavy serves have been an integral part. However, one other thing that has become more and more prominent with time is actions during frustration in a match. The most common way to remove that is by smashing your own racket. Almost all players on the tour have done that. To the extent that on more than one occasion, even the calm and cool Roger Federer did it.
Nick Kyrgios, the Australian ace, recently shared a video on Instagram where one can see Federer smashing his racket into pieces after missing a simple point against Novak Djokovic. Alongside the video the Aussie wrote, “No one would think Roger Federer has broken a racquet (laughing emoji) coz it doesn’t get flushed around every single news outlet hahaha.” The caption and the video was a clear jab at the constant scrutiny that Kyrgios gets from the media.
“Even the goats baby,” he concluded that even the greats, Federer, who is known for his gentleman-like conduct, in this context, have their vulnerable moments is what the Aussie was hinting through the video.

The video is from the 2009 Miami Open and the match was in a tight situation. With both players winning a set each, Djokovic took an early advantage in the third. On top of that, Federer missed a regulation forehand, and the frustration was high as he removed it on the racket. Sharing this video, Kyrgios in many ways defended his actions and also of many others. Kyrgios has often broken rackets when he is about to lose. It is not only him though, even Novak Djokovic has done that.
Recently in the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic smashed his racket in frustration. However, it was quite a surprise for the fans that Federer had done it. It just proved that the Swiss maestro is human, after all.
Rafael Nadal and the no racket-breaking policy

The entire racket-breaking thing mostly comes out when one reaches such a high level and then fails to deliver simple shots. It feels unfair while playing. Continuous losses and negative points trigger the entire unwanted aggression. However, in all these players who have broken rackets, the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, has never ever done that. He, in moments of incredible frustration, has also made sure that he doesn’t smash his racket.
One has seen him hit the racket on his leg or shoe. Once he hit his hand on the racket, but never let go of the racket. It is commendable, as even the cool and calm Roger Federer has broken his racket. Nadal being ultra-aggressive by nature and not breaking a racket seems impossible, but the truth is that the Spaniard has lived by this policy all through his illustrious career.
