Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from Wimbledon this year, the evening before he was scheduled to play his first-round match. He cited a wrist injury as his cause for not competing this year. Nick was seeded 30th this year and was set to face Belgian David Goffin in the opening round.
Nick wrote in his Instagram post, “I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year. I tried my hardest to be ready after surgery and be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again.”
Nick mentioned that he faced discomfort in his wrist, which on inspection turned out to be a torn ligament. “During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.”
The Australian has been absent for the majority of the season this year, having missed the Australian Open and the French Open thanks to arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. In fact, the Australian has played only one match so far, at Stuttgart, which he lost to Chinese player Wu Yibing in straight sets.

Interestingly, during the pre-championship interview at Wimbledon, Kyrgios seemed poised to defend his runner-up position from last year. “I look at my preparations last year coming in I probably had the most ideal preparation possible,” Kyrgios said during the interview. “It couldn’t be any different this year.” On being asked whether he misses the tour, Kyrgios answered in his usual mercurial fashion. “No, I don’t miss the sport at all, to be fair. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit. But it’s my job.”
Fans on Twitter were quick to share their reaction to the news. Most of them expressed their happiness at not having to see the controversial player on the grass courts of Wimbledon.
Twitter users were quick to point out that Nick is not wrong for prioritizing health and fitness instead of risking his career by playing injured.
Some fans were, however, more sympathetic towards the Australian and expressed sadness at seeing the defending runner-up absent at Wimbledon.
It remains to be seen when and where Nick Kyrgios will finally make his return on the tour. It is, however, without doubt, that most fans have strong opinions about his absence, for better or worse.
