Chilean tennis star Nicolas Jarry almost got himself in big trouble as he hit a ball girl during his quarterfinal match at the 2024 Miami Open.

As Jarry took on Daniil Medvedev in the big match, he hit a ballgirl while warming up. It was a worrisome scene considering the penalties Jarry could have attracted.

The disqualification rules in tennis clearly state that a player or a team can get disqualified if they hit a ball during a match. This rule applies even when the ball is hit unintentionally. Hence, Jarry almost got himself disqualified for hitting the ball girl.

The incident took place before the start of the match, when the two players were warming up. As Jarry was practicing his serves, one of his shots accidentally hit a ball girl who was running across the court. The Chilean immediately ran to check on the girl.

Jarry was seen consoling and asking the ball girl if she was fine. The Chilean left only when he was assured that the ball girl was not hurt. The video clip of the incident was shared on social media by the official broadcasters.

Why was Nicolas Jarry not disqualified despite hitting the ball girl?

As soon as Nicolas Jarry hit the ball girl, the Chilean feared a disqualification, just like Novak Djokovic was disqualified at the 2020 US Open. However, the Chilean tennis star survived a scare despite hitting a match official.

This was because the incident took place before the match started. As the players were still warming up and the play was not on, Jarry survived a disqualification, unlike Djokovic, who had hit the line judge during his fourth-round match at the 2020 US Open.

Although it was unintended, the rule book did not allow Djokovic to further compete in the tournament. The same happened recently with Japanese-Indonesian women’s doubles pair Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi, who were disqualified from the 2023 French Open after one of Kato’s shots hit a ball girl, leaving her in distress.

Despite apologizing, the pair was sent out of the court, with the crowd booing the official for disqualifying the players. However, Jarry was lucky that the incident took place during the warm-up and not when the play was on.
