“Not a shot at Casper Ruud” Nick Kyrgios criticizes the clay-court specialists for their dismal performance on other surfaces
Nick Kyrgios, Casper Ruud
Nick Kyrgios has always been known for controversies be it on the court due to his anger and frustration, smashing racquets, yelling at umpires, and even dragging other players into unwanted controversies. This time at ATP Halle Open 2022, Kyrgios has again given his opinion of several top 100 players. Kyrgios won a very tight match against World number 6, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and then in the press conference went on to bombard some of the top 100 players.
Kyrgios said, ” I am seeing these guys number 70 in the world, and I don’t know who he is. How’s that possible? I look at his grass-court record and hard-court record and he’s won like two matches ever on those surfaces and I am like ‘how can you have people in top 100 who can’t play on two other surfaces?’ This doesn’t make sense.”

Nick Kyrgios clarifies he is not taking a shot a Casper Ruud.
Nick Kyrgios once defaulted in a match against Casper Ruud for some violations and later Ruud said that he was happy to get the win because of the idiotic action by Kyrgios. Kyrgios retaliated by saying that Casper was only relevant because there was clay and he is nothing beyond the surface. Ruud is now ranked number 5 in the world, reaching the final of the French Open 2022. He also had an impressive hard-court season, winning a title and making it to Masters 1000 final in Miami. Though his grass-court performance was still shaky, he is becoming a more and more all-court player.
With the chances that people might pull into the controversy, Kyrgios clarified his Halle statement, “This is not a shot at Casper Ruud, I’m telling you that because he’s a gun. You’ve obviously followed the French[Open 2022], but this is for other people who live on clay. Obviously, Casper went to the final in Miami and whatnot.”
Kyrgios in into the quarterfinal of the Halle Open and will face Pablo Carreno Busta, one of the named clay-court specialists, but he is also well adept on other surfaces and Kyrgios would not want to lose to Carreno Busta after the statement he has made, who is ranked number 19 in the world.
