One of the most active players on the ATP Tour, Nick Kyrgios is embroiled time and time again in scandals. Given his long history of being in multiple controversies, his words and actions are always scrutinized more closely than that of other players. According to Tennishead magazine, he has received more fines for his temperamental on-court behavior than any other player in ATP history. But the most recent questions raised about Kyrgios were with regards to him not representing Australia in the Davis Cup.

While tennis is largely an individual sport, where everyone competing in the ATP and the WTA Tour plays for themselves, there are certain events where players compete under the flags of their country. Events like the Olympic Games and the Davis Cup do not offer any ranking points to the participants, but they are held in the highest esteem regardless, as they provide an excellent opportunity to play for patriotism. Hence, Nick Kyrgios not playing for Australia stuck out rather sorely for his critics.

In an interview with AAP news, Kyrgios was asked about his absence from the Davis Cup team. Kyrgios, who is never one to hold back or be diplomatic, gave a scathing reply in which he pointed out the apparent lack of support from his own country, and how it’s hard for him to forget all the negativity.

Kyrgios said “maybe if Australia embraced me a little bit more, I would play it and bring home the trophy, but who knows? it’s not always easy for me to erase everything in Australia that’s said negatively about me… I feel like this is the first year i’ve earned respect when it should have been given when I first came on tour.”

World no. 22 is clearly done with all the negative remarks redirected his way, especially in his own country. Thus, he has set a different set of priorities for himself, which involve his family, financial well-being, and his own happiness.

He said “I can travel around the world playing exhibitions around this time of year for six figures – you know, I feel I put myself in that position – so it’s an easy one for me. I’ll easily take time with my family and my girlfriend and enjoy experiences around the world and earn that type of money rather than play a week away in something where I wouldn’t be able to be with my girlfriend and I’m not getting paid that well. It doesn’t really make sense to me and my progression as an athlete.”

Emphasizing his wish to keep these priorities straight, Kyrgios stated “I’ll always do what’s best for me.”
