2nd seed Novak Djokovic scripted history on Sunday as he won a record-extending 24th Grand Slam by claiming the US Open 2023 title at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Serbian legend defeated the 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets(6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3) in just over 3 hours to clinch his 4th US Open title and 3rd Grand Slam of the year. Djokovic avenged his loss to Medvedev in the 2021 US Open final as he became the oldest man (36) to win the US Open in the Open Era.

The 36-year-old has also extended his lead over arch-rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in Grand Slams tally. The Serbian star is now two clear of Rafael Nadal’s tally of 22 men’s Slam singles titles, with Roger Federer two further back on 20. He moved one ahead of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era. The new world no.1 is in no mood to rest and isn’t stopping anytime soon. After taking a short detour to his home country for title celebrations, Djokovic has returned to the tour with the Serbian Davis Cup team in Valencia.

1st seed Carlos Alcaraz suffered a disappointing loss in the semi-final of US Open 2023 at the hands of the 3rd seed Daniil Medvedev. After the match, the 2-time Grand Slam champion announced his decision to withdraw from the Davis Cup tournament.

Djokovic defended Alcaraz’s decision to skip the Davis Cup. Speaking to the press in Spain, he said, “I was also 20 years old and I have skipped Davis Cup qualifiers. Carlos is not Superman and we have to understand his absence. He will surely bring a Davis Cup for his country and will be in Malaga if Spain qualifies. Of course it is better for us that he is not there.”

Speaking about the future of Davis Cup the world no.1 defended Gerard Pique, the founder of Kosmos Group, and instead blamed the ITF for mismanagement of the format of the tournament. He further said that the players should be consulted before any changes are made to the tournament.
