Novak Djokovic returned to training just three days after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the 2023 US Open final. He will now represent Serbia in the ongoing Davis Cup Finals, where he will try to win a second title.
The Serbian made history by winning a record 24th Grand Slam title on Sunday (September 10). He defeated Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the final at Flushing Meadows, avenging his 2021 loss to the Russian.
The World No.1 landed in Valencia on Wednesday and met up with his Serbian Davis Cup teammates to train. Although he wasn’t there previously, he now aims to aid the team’s journey to Malaga.
Speaking about his participation he said that there was no greater honour for him than competing for his country. He further remarked that he has played a lot in the past three months, so he’s not quite fresh. There was also insufficient time for him to recover. However, he still wishes to continue to exert himself and adjust to the new time zone.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner added that he is working with his compatriots as a team to represent their nation. He thinks that finding the lineup that will help them win is everything. They have recently triumphed 3:0. The 36-year-old stated that every point counts and that last year, they missed qualifying because of one set of points.
He further added “I hope to contribute to my team, even if it’s a point in singles. I’m looking forward to this.” The Serbian ace said that he was aware of his limitations as he has had just some time to adjust after the US Open. Nevertheless, he has always stated that Grand Slams and the Davis Cup are his top priorities.
Novak Djokovic breaks into tears after his warm welcome in Serbia
Djokovic thanked the home audience during a special statement and started crying. He said “There are rare moments when I am speechless, and this is one of them. This is a childhood dream come true for me.”
Djokovic appeared on the Old Palace balcony to thunderous acclaim in recognition of the incredible achievement. The 24-time Grand Slam champion also congratulated the Serbian basketball team for winning a silver medal. The legendary tennis player expressed his gratitude to everyone for allowing him to participate in the glitzy celebrations.
