There are many incidents in sports where the player playing the best does not get to win the match. A similar incident took place in the 2019 Wimbledon match between two of the tennis greats, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, where both players gave it their all in the match, which was eventually won by the Serbian.
However, recently, during an interview with 60 Minutes, the Serbian recalled the 2019 match and believed that Federer was the better player then and should have easily won the match.
The tennis professional further highlighted how important it is to pick the right points in the game to win so that even a player who is losing can flip the script and pull off a win.
I beat him 13-12 in the 5th set. The sets that I won were all won in tiebreaks. Overall, if you see stats, he was the far better player in every aspect, but I won the match. So that actually tells you can still win if you pick and choose which moments of the match you’re peaking and playing your best when it matters.Said the world number 1 on 60 Minutes.
Both players had two sets to their names when they played the tiebreaker to decide the winner. The final tiebreak went on until 13 points, with Novak edging out a famous Wimbledon win that would, later on, be known as one of the best finals of Wimbledon.
He won the game 7-6, 1-6, 4-6, 4-6, 13-12, but believes that Federer was the better player during the game.
