ATP World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has returned to training with WTA World No. 2 and good friend Aryna Sabalenka. The two have quickly become one of fan favorites for their chemistry and fun side.

The two are currently gearing up for the 2024 Indian Wells Open, the premier 1000-rated event. Nole is returning to the tournament for the first time since 2019. After the 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, he skipped 2021 to have some family time.

In the 2022 and 2023 editions, he was not allowed to play due to being unvaccinated against the COVID-19 vaccine. Nole is the joint-most successful man at the tournament alongside Roger Federer with five titles each.

As for Sabalenka, she is returning this year, having made it to the finals last year. She was narrowly defeated by Elena Rybakina in the finals, denying the Belarusian her maiden title at the event. In the other three appearances, her best run came in 2019 when she made it to the fourth round.

As the two top seeds eye the big title, the two shared a joint practice session. This comes after Nole had earlier practiced alongside Grigor Dimitrov and nearly gave up in funny banter. Sabalenka and Djokovic had enthralled fans with their antics before the 2024 Australian Open.

This time, however, they were a bit more serious. The two were seen in a drill where the two ran parallel to each other. One of the two held a pink ball with the challenge being tossing it around while running. While Djokovic didn’t throw the ball much far, the reigning AO champ had her fun with the Serb.

Both players await their first opponents of the tournament

As the seeds receive a bye in the first round, neither Sabalenka nor Djokovic are yet aware of their first opponent for this year’s event. Djokovic is the topmost seed in men’s singles, while Sabalenka is the second seed in women’s singles.

Nole will play the winner of the clash between qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki and Aleksandar Vukic. The Belarusian will await the winner of the match between Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Peyton Stearns. Both matches could be lined up on the same day as Indian Wells attempts a new schedule for the first time.
