World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the next tennis player to rise in protest of the new format of the reputed Davis Cup. The Serb is highly critical of the format, which does not allow for a long list of countries to conduct matches. This prevents the nations from being able to compete on their home ground.
The year 2019 saw the home-and-away format of the Davis Cup being switched to a round-robin format. This means that the nations will be split up into groups, and each group will be competing in a different country. However, this means that not all countries will be able to play on home soil. Novak Djokovic is not the only player to come out in protest of this format. Other veteran players, like Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray, have also expressed their disagreement with the current way of playing.
Nevertheless, the 36-year-old Serb is the newest member of the ATP Tour to voice it out. “This format does not allow 99% of countries to organize matches at home. The last time Serbia played at home was five years ago,” said the Serb. He seemed regretful about the fact that the upcoming generation of Serbian tennis players will not be able to witness their country playing on a global stage.
He further added, “We did not give the opportunity to young Serbs to see us play.” Furthermore, the new format of the Davis Cup has 16 teams competing in first-round ties. The winners of the first round will compete in the quarterfinal tie.
This will be followed by the semi-final and ultimately the final, where the champion will be crowned. Djokovic has successfully led Serbia into the quarter-final tie, where they will be battling against Great Britain.
Serbia made it to the top 8 at the Davis Cup
Team Serbia, headed by Novak Djokovic, will be facing Great Britain in the quarterfinal tie of the US Open. Despite Serbia having World No. 1 on their side, they will need to win two singles matches and a doubles match in order to come out victorious.
The Serbian team consists of Novak Djokovic, Laslo Djere, Miomir Kekmanovic, Dusan Lajovic, and Hamad Mededovic. However, excluding the 24-time Grand Slam title champion, no other player on the team is in the top 30 rankings. The Great Britain team, on the other hand, has Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Andy Murray, Jack Draper, and Neal Skupski on their side. This team has a better overall ranking compared to the Serbs.
Both teams will battle on the court in November 2023. While both teams seem to have quite a triumphant team on their sides, only one team can come out victorious. Both nations will have to put on their best show to win the tie for their country.
