Novak Djokovic has fired Serbia into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Davis Cup. The 36-year-old was back out on court within a week following his triumph at the 2023 US Open. The Serbian defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his country’s round-robin event against Spain.

Serbia claimed their second consecutive 3-0 victory, as they currently sit on top of their group. Djokovic was delighted after securing a vital point for his country and apologized to the home fans in Malaga for knocking Spain out of the Davis Cup. He already looks forward to the next task in hand, as Serbia will now face the Czech Republic to claim the top spot in the Group, which would give them a relatively easier draw in the knockouts. The veteran stated that he was in the ninth heaven after his victory, and believes that it is a privilege to compete for Serbia.

“I am in the ninth heaven right now. Playing for Serbia, my country, is something completely different. Pressure and responsibility, but also an honor. I am glad that I contributed with this important point for qualifying in Malaga. Unfortunately, the Spanish audience wanted that the national team passed, it did not succeed,” Nole said in a recent presser.

The Serbian ace further continued,” Now we are playing against the Czech Republic for first place, in order to have a slightly better draw in Malaga.”

Djokovic has asserted that winning the 2023 Davis Cup is the goal for Team Serbia. They last claimed the title back in 2010, when they defeated France in the finals in Belgrade. The team also reached the finals in 2013, losing to the Czech Republic by the narrowest of margins.

“It would mean a lot, that’s our goal. We had an outstanding year in 2010. We played the final in 2013 and three, four more semifinals. We were close. The format has changed. If you don’t win two singles, you have to win the doubles. We don’t have much experience in doubles. I hope that we will be complete in Malaga, healthy and that we will have a good chance,” said Djokovic. (H/T: ATPTour)

The Serbian will be looking forward to some well-earned rest, as the last couple of weeks have been pretty exhausting for him. The 36-year-old claimed the 2023 Cincinnati Masters title, before winning his fourth US Open title last Sunday. He had to cut short his celebrations, as he competed at the Davis Cup to help his country reach the last eight. The veteran is expected to return to the courts next month, as the indoor hard court season is fast approaching.
