World No. 2 Novak Djokovic has always received widespread popularity for his strong mental strength and his never dying ability which has been the mantra of his success for a decade now. Be it fan-favorite Roger Federer or the determination of Rafael Nadal in front of him, the Serb has always trusted his own mentality and has picked up the toughest of victories in matches where he has been regarded as an underdog or a non-fan-favorite.

Now every single tennis player in the world fears playing against the 23-time Grand Slam champion, and Djokovic talked about fighting his own inner demons in an exclusive interview with Asics at Wimbledon.

He said, “When I scream at members of my team during a match, that is because I am not dealing with the situation well and the monster that is coming behind you is getting bigger. You have to deal with your opponent, the crowd and so many other things, so you have to deal with your demons.”

He also talked about how it is not quite possible for him to stay in the present all the time with his mind constantly wandering about his past experiences which leads him to different directions. He believes that he has to contend with that saying, “On a tennis court, it’s even more intense. And if someone tells you not to think about something negative, you will inevitably think about it.”

Mental strength is influential for any player and it so does play an integral role in Djokovic’s life as well. Djokovic mentioned, “Mental wellness is an area people are paying more attention to and deservedly so. In an individual sport like this, you are on the court yourself and there is no one to help you when things go south. Of course, you have a team supporting you in the stands, but you have to work it out for yourself.”

Novak also believes that mentality needs to be trained even before setting foot on the court and failing to do so might make the task much more difficult thereby hindering the succession rate on the court as well. He talked about how important it is to have a long-term and short-term strategy in order to increase longevity and to play for a longer amount of time.
