Serbian World No.2 Novak Djokovic sobbed, but this time for real, unlike last time here in Wimbledon mocking the crowd. After losing the thriller against Carlos Alcaraz in the finals, Djokovic was heartbroken and emotionally sobbed during the court interview with a runner-up trophy in his hand. While sobbing in front of the mic, Djokovic said, “It’s nice to see my son still there, still smiling. I love you, thank you for supporting me and we can all have a big hug, and love each other.”
Djokovic was in the driver’s seat winning the first set but the young Spaniard had different plans for the night. The final score was 1-6, 7- 6(8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The Serbian’s emotional breakout was expected because this loss will eventually be a reminder to himself that the young guns are closing in, more than ever. He also said this during the speech in between, thanking his family and especially his son Stefan, that a “change of guards” is eventually happening.
Tennis Twitter has already seen mocking the Serbian because he was doing a similar sobbing act, mocking the crowd in the center court, two days back against the Italian star Jannik Sinner. “Karma is a b***h,” wrote some in the bird app.
Novak Djokovic loses in the Wimbledon Center court after a decade
The Spaniards are the masters of coming back from the coffin, at least in tennis. We have seen the DNA of an unparallel fighting spirit from the guy from Mallorca, Spain for about two decades. Carlos Alcaraz is the new guy, from the same country, who has dethroned the Serbian Great Novak Djokovic on the green turf of London.
When Rafael Nadal at the age of 22, did this against Roger Federer, the reigning champion at Wimbledon, The commentators on air announced, “There’s a new man at the helm of men’s tennis“. 14 years later, Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old Spaniard, has done the same thing against the reigning champion of Wimbledon, that too in a five-set thriller similar to how Nadal did it.
This match will eventually be in the history book for years and will be considered a change of guard, if the Serbian steps back from being the invincible guy he has been, in Rafael Nadal’s absence this year.
