Sibling relationships are complex, and the Djokovic brothers are no exception. In a recent interview with Sportal, Djordje Djokovic, youngest of the three Djokovic brothers, shared some insights into their family dynamics.
Growing up in Belgrade, Djordje Djokovic reminisced about the close bond he shared with his brothers, Novak and Marko. They spent countless hours playing tennis together and supporting each other’s dreams. However, as they grew older and pursued their individual careers, their paths began to diverge.
Djordje recalls an incident when he had to choose between seeing his brothers or working on his tennis game. “I didn’t travel with him (Novak Djokovic) very often. I remember one winter my father asked me if I wanted to go with Novak to Australia or to Nikola Pilić’s Academy, I chose to go to Niki. For me, the desire for sports was greater than anything else.”
The Djokovic brothers make sure to keep in touch via phone to cover up the distance
Now the tournament director at the Serbia Open, Djordje admits that due to their busy schedules, the three brothers don’t see each other as often as they would like. This is a reminder that even in the closest of families, life can sometimes get in the way.
It’s always nice when the family gets together, when above all, the three of us are together, although it’s not that often because we live on different sides of the world. But we try to get together, really, to spend every moment we can together.”
Djordje mentioned that in spite of not getting to meet for most of the year, the brothers still keep in touch via phone. “We talk on the phone often, and we always have excuses when we don’t talk (too). But those are all silly excuses. We can simply be lazy and that’s all normal. But God bless and thank God that we have such a close relationship. Let’s just maintain it, as long as possible,” Djordje said.
While Novak travels around the world year-round for tournaments or other commitments, he always makes sure to meet his brothers each year during the Serbian Open, and at the end of the season.
