The World No.1 Novak Djokovic won his historic 24th Grand Slam at the US Open 2023, defeating Russian Daniil Medvedev in the finals. Talking about his entire US Open journey, former Australian player Wally Masur analyzed his net game and complimented the Serb on his amazing skill set.
Wally Masur, looking back at the finals between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, stated on the AO podcast, “What impressed me the most in his (US Open) final against Medvedev was the fact that he hit the net 44 times. He has served and volleyed about 35 times, for a 90% success rate.” He went on to compare the Serbian’s game with that of Pat Rafter and Stefan Edberg, calling his net coverage a combination of the 2 legends. He further added, “He was volleying so many times, covering the net like Pat Rafter and Stefan Edberg combined.”
The 24 time Grand Slam Champion had a rather easy final against the Russian for most part of it. Djokovic did not drop a single set in the entire tournament against any of his opponents, with the exception of fellow countryman, Laslo Djere. He looked confident and dominating since the beginning of the US Open.
Masur is a former Australian player who achieved a career-high ranking of 15. His highest achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the 1987 Australian Open and the 1993 US Open.
Novak Djokovic will next compete at the Paris Masters
The Serb has taken a much-needed break from tennis after winning a historic 24th Slam at the US Open. Djokovic has had an excellent and mind-blowing season this year, having reached all 4 Major finals and winning 3 out of these. The 7 time Wimbledon Champion also led his nation to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.
Djokovic skipped the entire Asian leg of the Tour and will next feature in the Paris Masters which is scheduled to begin from the 30th of October. With Carlos Alcaraz showcasing a disappointing performance at the Asian tournaments, it will become easier for the Serb to maintain his No.1 position without much threat from the Spaniard.
