Google has released their ‘Year in Search’ for 2023 and apparently, the tennis players have dominated it this year. The ‘Year in Search’ is a record of the most searched keywords on Google over a calendar year that the company reveals in December. It helps a ton in understanding what the overall trend of the year was and what people were talking about.
A total of four tennis players, namely Novak Djokovic (#1), Rafael Nadal (#2), Serena Williams (#3) and Carlos Alcaraz (#10) made it to the list of the most searched athletes in 2023. Djokovic was also the 6th highest searched person overall in the world after the likes of Johnny Depp, Will Smith, etc. Andrew Tate is eighth on the same list.
Tennis players were the top searches overall in many nations as well. For starters, Serena Williams was the No. 10 top search in the United States of America, while Nadal and Alcaraz were the 4th and 6th top searches in Spain. Novak Djokovic was in the top 10 searches of several nations, like Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. Ashleigh Barty, who retired in 2023, was the eighth-top searched in Australia.
It must be noted that Google showed selective data in their Year in Search report. Data for countries like France, Russia, Serbia, Croatia, and China were not provided. Thus, many famous names like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who usually make it to the list, are nowhere to be seen this year. It’s solely because of this.
Tennis events fall behind in the Google’s 2023 Year in Search
Unlike tennis players, who dominated the data this year, tennis events were not seen as frequently in it. The Australian Open was the only tennis event that came up in the top 5 searches of several nations. It was also the second-most-searched term in Australia.

This can be because of the controversy regarding Novak Djokovic’s medical exemption to enter Australia for not being vaccinated against the coronavirus. This also explains why the Serb is ranked so high on the list overall.
Players like Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Ashleigh Barty’s retirement also made them a hot topic all year. Thus, they were some of the most searched keywords in so many nations. Rafael Nadal, on the other hand, was injured throughout the year and people were looking for updates on his recovery.
