Rafael Nadal became a father for the first time yesterday and close rival Novak Djokovic came ahead to congratulate the Spaniard. Nadal’s wife Mery had developed some complications during her pregnancy but both baby and mother were reported to be doing good after the delivery.

While Nadal did not officially break the news, the news did not remain a secret for a long. With the entire tennis fraternity congratulating the Nadal family, Djokovic also joined in. Playing at the 2022 Astana Open, after qualifying for the finals, Djokovic sent his wishes across through the press conference.

“Congrats! I didn’t know. Really? It’s a beautiful news. I wish his wife and baby a lot of health and happiness. As a father, I’m not gonna give any advise (smiling) to him. He has a big family. I’m sure he will experience it himself (smiling),” said Djokovic.

Djokovic sent pleasantries to the Nadal family after his semi-final win. Djokovic was up against new rival Daniil Medvedev and the two were engaged in a fiery battle. The first set went to the Russian while Djokovic came in clutch in the second set tie-breaker to force a decider set.

Medvedev however brought an anti-climatic end to the match as he informed Djokovic immediately after the tiebreaker ended. Djokovic was disappointed with the way the match ended as he was high on adrenaline but it was out of his hands as Medvedev could not continue further.

Djokovic went on to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals claiming a straight-set win to win his 4th title this year and 90th of his career. Djokovic now tails Nadal with 2 titles on the 5th spot as the Spaniard sits 4th on the all-time career titles list with 92 titles.
