In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Novak Djokovic talked about the time when the media wrongly portrayed him as a ‘no-vax’ person. He talked about a lot of other things and calmly answered all the questions put forward by the Italian media. The COVID drama unfolded when he was not allowed to participate in the 2022 Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic said that he had COVID but was cured. He had followed the rules, but he was quickly turned into a political case whom the media could target as someone against the mainstream. “They put the no-vax label on me, a completely false thing, which still gives me a stomach ache. Then it turned out that the pandemic situation was very different from how it was presented. Now the World Health Organization has written that the virus is no longer so serious, that it is part of all the viruses we have,”, Novak said while expressing his disappointment.
He was portrayed as a villain. He was being called “Novax Djokocovid“. He expressed that he just believed in having a choice for himself and was neither pro-vax nor anti-vax. He also expressed how, against the big media, he could not defend himself. This made some organizers and even players turn their backs on him.
“But society has split. And I was placed in the middle, singled out as persona non grata. I found myself alone”, he said. He later talked about having COVID for the second time, which resulted in him missing two US Opens. He complied with the rules and stayed true to his words. He also added that, despite winning the 2023 Australian Open on his return, he was disappointed with his colleagues and the media.
