Novak Djokovic enters a record 32nd grand slam final after ousting Cameron Norrie at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic won his 27th consecutive match at SW19 and moves into the final of Wimbledon 2022, where he will be the huge favorite to defend his title for the third time in a row. Djokovic faced the British number 1, Cameron Norrie who played his first grand slam semifinal at Wimbledon. Djokovic looked quite shaky in the first set as Norrie broke him thrice to take the first set 6-3. The beginning of match resembled Djokovic’s struggle against Jannik Sinner, but he quickly got back into the right frame of mind and after an easy miss by Norrie in the second set, Djokovic pounced on him to break and leveled the match.

The momentum shift in the second set proved too big for Norrie as he began to crumbled slowly as Djokovic started looking stronger and stronger. It was a sensational performance from Djokovic after faltering in the first set, and he wrapped up the match in four sets. This win pushed Djokovic’s Wimbledon win streak to 27 and it has been more than 5 years since Djokovic lost at SW19. This appearance in the final of Wimbledon 2022 also helped Djokovic create a stupendous record of 32 Grand Slam final appearances, the most in men’s singles.

During the on-court interview after his semifinal victory, Djokovic talked about his opponent and the new local hero Norrie. He said: “He was the better player in the first set. Semis of a Slam, I played them a lot, but there is always pressure, from yourself and from the outside. Cam is a great player. I was tight in the beginning, didn’t go through the shots. Got a bit lucky in the second set, he gifted me the break, missed a couple od putaways and momentum changed.”

Djokovic will face Nick Kyrgios, the unlikeliest of the finalist for his seventh Wimbledon title. About his amazing grand slam final appearance stat, Djokovic said: “Job is not finished. One thing is for sure, there is gonna be a lot of fireworks emotinally (against Kyrgios). He is playing freely, big game, lot of power in his shots. I’ve never won a set off him, hopefully it can be different this time.” Djokovic has got a big task at his hand to defend the Wimbledon title for the third consecutive time against a very dangerous Kyrgios who was never even considered as a candidate for the grand slam final.
