A tennis fan has brutally criticized the ATP for reinstating Andrey Rublev his match points and prize money after defaulting in his semifinal match in Dubai. The fan claimed that Novak Djokovic was heavily fined, and no ranking points or prize money was reinstated when the Serbian defaulted.
Rublev hit the spotlight after he was defaulted in his semifinal match with Alexander Bublik. The Russian was said to have yelled using obscenities in his mother tongue at the line judge.
However, defaulted players are likely to lose ranking points and prize money if found guilty. But, Andrey Rublev didn’t face the full punishment of the tennis law after an appeal.
That led a fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) to brutally criticize the ATP decision. They insist that Djokovic was defaulted the most money for mistakenly hitting the line judge with the ball in the throat.
A reminder that Djokovic was fined the most money in the history of Tennis ($268k) for all his ranking points and even fined for not attending a post-match conference for accidentally hitting an official when tapping the ball back at the end of a game. He also apologized immediatelytweeted the fan
However, the ATP’s decision to allow Rublev to retain his No.5 ranking and prize money comes after an appeal by the Russian against the decision of the chair umpire during the semifinal match. He was fined $36,406 which will be removed from his $157,755 prize money.
Jimmy Connors gives his opinion on defaulted Andrey Rublev
Jimmy Connors recently gave his opinion on Andrey Rublev being defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct during his semifinal match at the just concluded ATP event in Dubai. The was reported to have yelled obscene words at the line umpire.
On the Advantage Connors podcast, Jimmy, the eight-time Grand Slam champion revealed that it was wrong for the Russian to be defaulted and disqualified. Instead, a warning or point penalty would have been the right punishment.
[To] default them, you know, not give them a warning, not give them a point penalty, but just saying, 'You're done'… I'm passionate about this, only because they've taken away the voice of a player. They've taken his voice away, you know, to where he has to go and conform to whatever has been thrown at him. You know, 'the ball was out', I can't question it… you can't question that, you just gotta go along with that.said Connors during his podcast
Andrey Rublev, who is regarded as one of the ‘cool guys’ by fellow players and fans would have to make sure that he puts all these controversies to rest at the upcoming Indian Wells Tournament.
