A recent clip from the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Dan Evans in the third round of the US Open that went viral on the internet has turned many heads in the tennis world. In the video, Alcaraz can be seen getting pills from his box in between matches. Fans have criticized the Spaniard for the same and pointed out that when Novak Djokovic even gets a drink from his box during matches, he does not hear the end of it.
Carlos Alcaraz ended up beating Evans pretty easily in the third-round match. He lost the third set but came back in the fourth to emerge victorious. With this, the Spaniard now faces Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth Round of the tournament.
In between his matches, Alcaraz was seen asking one of his team members for help due to some problem. One of his team members from the box was then seen handing a small gas bottle with some pills in it to a ball kid, who passed it on to Carlos, who was then sitting on the bench at the side of the court. The incident took place in broad daylight at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and thus the involvement of an unfair act is highly unlikely. Yet, it did not stop fans from criticizing the youngster.
Many fans are of the opinion that the backlash that the Spanish ace is receiving is nothing compared to the one that Djokovic received in 2020 when he was handed a drink by a team member during the match. Back then, it was called Djokovic’s ‘secret stuff’ and the term is being used again by American commentators in this case.
Twitter reacts to Carlos Alcaraz being handed pills during his Round 3 match in US Open
Many fans tried to defend Carlos on the internet too, revealing that it was nothing serious and that he was feeling a little bit under the weather. However, that was not a good enough excuse for most other fans, as they continued to crucify the 20-year-old and claimed that it surely looked like something shady was being done. Here are some of those Twitter reactions.
Carlos Alcaraz has won the first three rounds of his US Open campaign pretty easily. He will now take on Italy’s unseeded player Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round, i.e., the Round of 16.
