“Protecting his best friend Rafa” – Novak Djokovic fans run riot on Roger Federer for not admitting that the Serb is GOAT

Roger Federer seems to have landed himself in trouble amongst Serbian star Novak Djokovic’s fans, as he was rather hesitant to admit that the current World No. 1 is the GOAT. In an interview with the Swiss-German newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the Swiss player opened up about the ongoing GOAT debate in tennis, which did not sit well with Djokovic’s fans out there.

As per the Swiss maestro himself, he cannot decide if Djokovic is the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) as long as 22-time Grand Slam title champion Rafael Nadal is an active professional tennis player.

“As long as Rafa plays, you can’t really answer. Then there are some records that can’t be broken.“, he answered. That’s not all, he further justified his stand by comparing Djokovic with German legend, Boris Becker saying he don’t know if winning Wimbledon at the age of mere 17 like Becker is best or winning the Roland Garros at 36 like Novak.

As expected, the response was enough to anger the fans of Djokovic, who religiously believe that the Serb is indeed the Greatest Of All Time. They called out Federer for seemingly favoring his ‘best friend’, Nadal.

Federer and Nadal have always been considered good friends on and off the court. Their friendship goes back to the time when they both entered professional tennis around the same time back in 2001. Since then, they have had the utmost respect for each other and have never been too shy to admit it.

This could be supported by the fact that when Federer bid adieu to his career in the Laver Cup 2022, the Spaniard was seen shedding tears of emotion. He even went on to say that he feels a part of him has left ever since Federer’s retirement.

Given their long-standing friendship, it is not surprising that Federer considers Nadal’s presence in the game a factor in determining the GOAT. However, this perspective has not been well received by Djokovic’s passionate fan base.

As soon as he gave his answer, the Serb’s fans took to Twitter to call out Federer and express their anger and disappointment. While the majority of fans called out Federer’s answer as a display of a lack of sportsmanship. Some even went on to say that Federer’s winning the Sportsmanship Award was a big mistake and he clearly didn’t deserve it.

The ‘NoleFam’ community further asserted that Federer’s remarks stem from jealousy towards Djokovic and alleged that he harbors nothing but disdain for the Serbian champion.
