Novak Djokovic‘s fans recently lashed out at sports journalist Ben Rothenberg for sharing non-tennis related news on the player on Twitter, in an attempt to evoke hate against him. Ben Rothenberg had reshared a tweet on Novak attending a lecture on Energy secrets hidden in ancient civilizations by Dr. Semir Osmanagic.
A little back story on this incident. Novak Djokovic frequently visits the small town of Visoko in Bosnia since 2020, which is home to Bosnian pyramids. Dr. Semir has promoted these pyramids as the largest man-made pyramids with spiritual energy. These pyramids are claimed to have ancient healing powers, though it is rejected by scientists. In 2021, Djokovic also inaugurated tennis courts at the pyramid park.
Novak Djokovic is seen in pics during the lecture, which also covered “Spiritual potential of human beings.” The journalist Ben got slammed extensively for his tweet by Djokovic’s fans. They said this story had nothing to do with tennis as a sport, Djokovic’s potential, or his losses in Srpska Open or Monte Carlo. Ben Rothenberg is otherwise considered a highly influential tennis journalist.
This incident was especially blown out of proportion as Djokovic attended the session in between the Banja Luka Open. Djokovic crashed out of the tournament in the Quarter-finals against his country mate Dusan Lajovic. Earlier in Monte Carlo Masters, Djokovic crashed out in the round of 16. He lost to up-and-coming Lorenzo Musetti.

Some of the fans thought the tweet was highly non-journalistic in nature. While some said that a person has their freedom of belief and Djokovic attending such a lecture shows that he is “Curious”.
Some fans said that it is harmless what Djokovic believes as long as he is playing good tennis. Beliefs and religion are personal and separate from sports. Some fans also pointed out to other players like Andrey Rublev is also religious and crosses himself after every win.
Though the majority consensus was in favor of Djokovic, some Twitteratis struck on the World no. 1 and his spiritual beliefs. Some connected his loss to Lajovic to the incident, saying that his beliefs didn’t help him in the match.
