Former professional tennis player Greg Rusedski recently appeared on the Tennis Channel’s InsideIn podcast to express his thoughts on Novak Djokovic‘s unprecedented career. Rusedski claimed that the Serbian is finally getting the respect he deserves. As per him, Djokovic’s amazing professionalism, consistency, and enduring motivation have carried him out of the shadows of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Despite his own tremendous successes, the former British-Canadian player underlined that Djokovic has long been eclipsed by the legacies of Federer and Nadal. But now he believes that the tide is turning, and that Djokovic is finally being recognized for his exceptional contributions to tennis.
“Let’s take advantage of it because it’s a very rare thing to see in sport. And I think he finally gets all the credit he deserves because he has always been in the shadow of Federer and Nadal with love and admiration. Now he really is what he deserves for what he accomplishes,” Rusedski said. (H/T – We Love Tennis)
Greg Rusedski is astounded by Djokovic’s extraordinary journey
Rusedski was astounded by Djokovic’s ability to sustain motivation and ambition at the age of 36, when many players begin to wind down their careers. He jokingly compared himself to Djokovic. “I mean, I was brain dead at the age of 36, just playing social tennis on the senior circuit. So for him to do that at this high level and still be the best player on the planet is exceptional, “ he said.
Rusedski also stated that Djokovic’s dominance on the court is unrivaled. He emphasized that the Serb’s long-term health and steady performance throughout his career merits a special mention.
“I think he is the most professional. Even though we heard Rafa talk about it where he said, ‘look, I’ve had so many injuries throughout my career, Novak has always been healthy, he’s the guy who has always come through physically,’ and that in itself is a skill. People don’t look at recovery, health, consistency, all those things,” Rusedski explained during the podcast.
