The upcoming US Open is to commence on the 28th of August. This year, the prestigious grand slam has faced a lot of scrutiny as World No. 2, Novak Djokovic, was previously denied entry into the United States due to his unvaccinated status. However, crowds cheered as the 23-time singles Grand Slams winner made his way into the stadium after two years.
Djokovic returned to the Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first time since he was last there in 2021 for the US Open finals. The Serb had lost the title to the current World No. 4, Daniil Medvedev, back in 2021, where Medvedev defeated Djokovic 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a straight three-set win. He was welcomed back in a resounding event as the fans poured out their support for the player.
Djokovic won in a thrilling face-off with the emerging superstar and the World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, at the Cincinnati Masters and claimed his 49th ATP title. He defeated Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) to secure the title. Straight after the match, the 36-year-old went over to the city of New York for the biggest upcoming tournament of 2023.
Djokovic had earlier missed the 2022 US Open since he was unvaccinated. This year, as well, he was unable to enter the States for the tournaments at Miami and Indian Wells. The United States announced its plans to end the COVID-19 vaccination requirements a few months back on 11th May. The tennis fans of Djokovic are elated, especially after witnessing his excellent form against Carlos in Cincinnati a few days before.
