Carlos Alcaraz created history yesterday by defeating one of the best players on the grass court, Novak Djokovic, in an exceptional 5 set match. The final between the World No. 1 and World No. 2 was the most anticipated final of all time. And the result and the overall match stood out to everyone’s expectations. But this final pose a question in front of all of us: Is this the emergence of a brand-new rivalry on the court?
During the post-match press conference, Djokovic was asked about the possibility of a strong rivalry between him and Carlos Alcaraz developing, to which he replied while smiling, “I would hope so, for my sake. He’s going to be on the tour for quite some time. I don’t know how long I’ll be around.”
The Serb acknowledged the few matches they had played against each other, emphasizing that they had already battled three fiercely contested games, two of which took place this year during the final stages of Grand Slam tournaments. Djokovic reiterated his wish for a future meeting at the US Open, saying, “Yeah, I hope we get to play in the US Open. I mean, why not?“
Djokovic has a great winning probability in the US Open and Alcaraz has also done very well on the hard court. He is this year’s defending champion. With the Wimbledon men’s final taking place for more than 4 hours, Djokovic expressed his desire to play again with Alcaraz at the Arthur Ashe Stadium this year. “I think it’s good for the sport, 1 and 2 in the world facing each other in almost a five-hour, five-set thriller. Couldn’t be better for our sport in general, so why not?,” said the Serbian.
Novak Djokovic’s year so far

Djokovic started this year by Defeating Sebastian Korda in the 2023 Adelaide International in a thrilling three sets. He won the Australian Open as well, defeating Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas. This victory gave him his 10th AO title. It was an astounding performance as last year he wasn’t allowed to play in the AO due to his anti-vaccination stance.
On February 27, he broke Steffi Graf’s record of 377 weeks at World No. 1 in women’s tennis, which she set 25 years previously. He became the player with the most weeks at No. 1 on both the men’s and women’s tours. He was not allowed to play in the Indian Wells and Miami Open for his anti-vaccination stance. So, he directly participated on the clay courts. In the French Open, he defeated Alcaraz in the semis in 4 good sets. He won the French Open by defeating Casper Ruud and became the first man in tennis history to achieve a Triple Career Grand Slam.
