Novak Djokovic has taken the ongoing Wimbledon by storm again as everyone expected and has played some dominant tennis by winning the first two rounds without dropping a single set against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin and Australia’s Jordan Thompson respectively. With his third-round match set to take place on Friday (7 July) and the opponent to yet decided, the probability of Djokovic facing Stan Wawrinka has increased.
Wawrinka will play against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round later this afternoon after his crucial win against Emil Ruusuvuori by 5-7, 5-7, 4-6. The three-time Grand Slam winner is not quite considered a favorite like he used to be in his prime but he is still an opponent to worry about. Djokovic was asked about what he feels about facing Wawrinka in his next match at Wimbledon 2023 and how he has affected him on and out of the pitch in the post-match conference.
Novak answered, “Well, he took away two Grand Slams from me. That’s the role he played, beating me in two Grand Slam finals (smiling). No, I like Stan a lot. He’s a great person. Really always inspirational what he’s doing at his age. He’s almost 40 years old and he still keeps going strong. That’s something that not many people can do.” Through all these words, it was clear that Djokovic respects Wawrinka a lot and that he is keen to face him should it happen in the next round.

Stan Wawrinka has been entertaining the tennis world with his beautiful tennis for nearly two decades now and is nowhere close to stopping anytime soon. He has already won the Grand Slam thrice and has even caused trouble for the Big 3 in several major tournaments. Novak Djokovic was thrilled with him still picking himself up every day and fighting to bring the best out of him.
Novak added, “After several surgeries of his knees, he keeps going strong and trying to create some more history for himself and tennis. He had a fantastic career. That’s why I think it’s something that is very admirable and very impressive that after the difficulties, physical difficulties, he has been through in the last five, six, seven years, he still refuses to give up and still keeps going. One of the nicest one-handed backhands that I have ever played against, ever seen. Very powerful player.”
