Novak Djokovic won his third-round match against World No. 33 Grigor Dimitrov in the Italian Open. In the post-match interview with Prakash Amritraj for the Tennis Channel, Djokovic impeccably imitated the world-famous rapper Snoop Dogg. This was in response to a Dr. Dre reference made by Prakash. The current World No. 1 sang a line out of the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg song, Still D.R.E.
Till a few years back, Novak Djokovic had a reputation for being quite a joker in interviews and even on the court. He used to do many impersonations on the court to entertain his crowd. Though some fans use to find it offensive if he imitated one of their favorite players, most found his impersonations hilarious.
This was not the first time he impersonated the iconic Rapper. At Monte Carlo 2023, at a pre-event party he dressed up as Snoop Dogg and grooved with Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna (known as Bops). His dance moves were so impressive that Ivan Gakhov‘s girlfriend called him ” THE GOATEST”.
Novak Djokovic likes to keep it light
Novak Djokovic has been known as an on-court entertainer. His funny imitation of so many of his opponents earned him the title of ‘Court Jester’ or ‘Joker’ or ‘Djoker’. His imitations of Rafael Nadal were especially funny, which didn’t always get appreciated though. Not just his rivals, he also imitated legends such as John McEnroe and his ex-coach Boris Becker.
Djokovic’s imitation of Becker came when the ex-World No. 1 was sitting in his team box and supporting him. Becker had turned red in his face but appreciated his own imitations. His McEnroe’s imitation was that of McEnroe throwing his famous on-court tantrums.
Djokovic has even imitated Maria Sharapova once on the court in a very funny manner. Her trademark screams and flicking of her hair were the highlights of the imitation. Though this one received a lot of negative response from tennis fans, as many thought it was women objectification. Some even went to the extent of calling it bordering on misogyny. One can say now Djokovic is treading on safer space by imitating the goofy and fun-loving Snoop Dogg. Safe to assume he won’t get any flak for this.
