Novak Djokovic might be the best tennis player on the face of the earth, but he is not liked much on social media. Cyberbullying is most common among stars in entertainment and sports. With the immense pressure that comes with tournaments, press conferences, and other obligations, tennis fans also feel a lot of heat from social media. Though tennis players are on social platforms to engage with fans better, it never serves that purpose.

Recently, research was conducted by the World Sports Network, which has shown why more needs to be done to protect sports stars from online abuse. WSN performed social media analytics on Twitter and Facebook comments about various key players. However, unsurprisingly, Novak Djokovic was the least-liked player of all active players.

Only 7% as compared to Djokovic’s 11%. In comparison, Cameron Norrie is the least hated online. His negative Twitter sentiment score stands at 4%, and his angry Facebook reactions are only 1%.

As expected, cyberbullying among women tennis players is higher as compared to men. WSN compared the top six seeds of the upcoming French Open for the ATP and WTA. The WTA’s top 6 seeds have an average negative sentiment of 8.6% as compared to 8.3% for the ATP. Aryna Sabalenka is Djokovic’s counterpart when it comes to negative sentiment on social media.

Aryna Sabalenka receives the most negative feedback with 15% on Twitter and five percent of Facebook reaction posts as “angry”. Sabalenka receives a lot of hate for their nationality and also her openness about locker room tensions in WTA.

To combat the hate players receive during tournaments, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) is providing all players at the 2023 Roland Garros with greater protection against cyberbullying. They are offering all players access to a tool called Bodyguard.ai which is a monitoring tool for social media. It is an anti-online harassment and hate speech tool. There would be constant monitoring of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Discord. If a player opts for this protection, their social media accounts will be connected to Bodyguard’s technology.

This could be a first step toward protecting players’ mental health due to the impacts of social media. In the future, more tournaments are going to deploy such filters to shield players from online hate and keep them focused on the most important thing, which is playing the tournament.
