Novak Djokovic likely to play the US Open after ‘last-minute’ COVID norms rule change in the United States

Novak Djokovic has had to suffer a lot this season due to the decisions he made regarding the Covid vaccine. Djokovic had made it clear time and again that he won’t be taking the vaccine as it is something that goes against his principles. Due to this, he was forced to miss the Australian Open earlier this year and wasn’t allowed to compete at the Golden Swing due to the very same reason.

After Djokovic’s Wimbledon triumph, talks were once again centered on his participation in the North American swing. The USA has a very strict vaccination mandate according to which, Djokovic isn’t allowed to enter the country given that he is unvaccinated. For the same reason, he missed the ongoing Montreal Masters and will miss the Cincinnati Masters next week.

But just a few days before the US Open, a new ray of hope has emerged for Djokovic and his fans. There has been a slight change in the health rules to enter the USA. The authorities now don’t discriminate between those who have taken the COVID vaccine and those who are yet to take one. But despite this, the US Open authorities haven’t issued any statement yet regarding the clarification about participation of unvaccinated players in the US Open.

The latest guidelines are yet to be released the CDC is yet to update its travel advice. According to the latest guideline, unvaccinated individuals are still not welcome in the USA but with the current ruling, there may be a change in the guidelines soon.

“This updated guidance is intended to apply to community settings. In the coming weeks, CDC will work to align stand-alone guidance documents, such as those for healthcare settings, congregate settings at higher risk of transmission, and travel, with today’s update,” the statement read.

Off late, Djokovic has been getting a lot of support from celebrities and politicians from the USA. And given the current scenario, Djokovic playing the US Open despite being unvaccinated could become a reality.
