One of the renowned coaches in the tennis world, Gunter Bresnik, has made a very brave statement about World No. 2 Novak Djokovic‘s form in the upcoming times. With the Serbian losing his first Wimbledon title in five years last week against Carlos Alcaraz, there has been a lot of talk regarding his competitiveness and strive for hunger. Bresnik feels that Novak is now no more determined to win titles as he looked in the last decade battling Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer continuously.

And now with Federer retired and Nadal coming to the end of his career, suffering various injury problems, it will only be time until the Serbian feels that he has had enough. Bresnik talked to Kleine Zeitung, saying, “I have the theory that the rivalries with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray drove him to top performances – of course, that also applies to the others. Not only in the match but also in the time in between, during training or preparing for a match.”

He also mentioned how much of a driving force the Big 3 were for one another, leading one another to bring the best outta themselves. Bresnik added, “And this rivalry does not exist with Alcaraz. I have always said that Djokovic will lose motivation once there is no more constant competition with Nadal and Federer and he has won 23 Grand Slam titles.”

A lot has changed since the commencement of the last decade, with a lot of new stars arriving in the sport and many leaving the sport behind. But fans will never ever forget what the Big 5 has given the sport in the last 10-15 years dominating all the major tournaments. Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray, Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer were regarded as the toughest opponents in the last few years continuously battling it out against each other for literally every single trophy.

And just like every sport where every single player needs a counterpart or a strong rival for maintaining longevity and thirst for hunger alive, it’s the same for tennis as well. With Federer retired, Wawrinka and Murray already out of the top 50, and Nadal injured for a long time now, Djokovic might still not have in himself to pick himself up every single day and keep on grinding.
