Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic has landed himself in trouble with his recent Instagram story on the attack in Kosovo. As a few armed men from Serbia attacked the Kosovo police and three of them died in retaliation, it seemed Djokovic prayed for their souls to rest in peace. Djokovic shared a post on his Instagram story that seemed to glorify the attackers by lighting candles for them.

The Serbian then showered a few praying emojis along the post. The tennis superstar’s post soon caught the attention and a Kosovan media house reshared it on their social media handles while slamming Djokovic.

“Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has posted a picture glorifying the killed attackers of the Kosovo Police. EU and the US have called it a terrorist attack,” wrote the media house while sharing a snapshot of Djokovic’s Instagram story. This led to a massive furor among the fans who criticized Djokovic for glorifying terrorism.

A large number of fans criticized the Serbian for his gesture. While a few labeled him as a hypocrite, a user called Djokovic a fascist. Meanwhile, fans demanded the 24-time Grand Slam winner be banned from the ATP Tour as soon as possible. Check out the different sets of reactions below.

What happened in Kosovo and why Novak Djokovic reacted this way?

Violence broke out in the Banjska village in Kosovo near the Serbia border on September 24 (Sunday). At least 30 heavily armed men sieged a monastery and then engaged in a clash with the Kosovan police. This resulted in four deaths- three militants and one policeman. Kosovo’s president Vjosa Osmani has accused Serbia and its president Aleksandar Vucic of being behind a shootout.

“Kosovo is under attack,” Osmani told Reuters in an interview at her office on Thursday. “The (armed) group simply exercised the intentions and the motives of Serbia as a country and Vucic as the leader.” She also feared more such attacks in the future. Countries like the US as well as the European Union that played a big part in getting Kosovo independence, condemned the attack.

Meanwhile, there are many who are rallying behind the attackers blaming the Kosovan government for forcing the ethnic Serbs to live away from Serbia. Novak Djokovic has spoken multiple times about this conflict between Kosovo and Serbia and has called Kosovo the “heart of Serbia“. Now his reaction to this attack and Kosovo has caused uproar and it remains to be seen if Djokovic issues a clarification or not.
