The Professional Tennis Players Association(PTPA), led by Novak Djokovic released a concerning video on Twitter(Now called X) showing an incomplete stadium at Cancun. With the WTA Finals set to start on the 29th of October, it is truly disheartening to see the stadium still not being ready for the players.

The PTPA is an association co-founded by Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil to give a greater degree of autonomy to the players. An association consisting of both male and female players will serve as a player-centric organization. With major concerns about the lack of transparency by the Association of Tennis Professionals(ATP), the Serb had partnered with Pospisil to create this organization.

Currently, the PTPA consists of more than 500 members. It was initially founded as a non-profit in Canada in 2021. This is also the first player-only organization since 1972. Currently, the committee is headed by top players like Paula Badosa, Novak Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz, Ons Jabeur, John Isner, and others. The PTPA entered the stadium at Cancun and got a clear picture of the progress at the stadium.

However, the video posted by the organization clearly showed that the stadium was still incomplete. With the WTA Finals beginning in two days, the process must truly hasten if they wish to start the event on time.

PTPA asserts that they should remain free to play where they wish

With a large number of athletes being slammed for being ready to play in Saudi Arabia, the PTPA has extended their support to these players. They believe that the players should not be expected to act as a ‘moral police’ when it comes to these issues.

PTPA CEO Ahmad Nassar said:

The PTPA, like other players associations, exists to represent all the players. That includes players with various viewpoints on nuanced and complicated issues such as holding events in Saudi Arabia.

He also emphasized that players must be free to play or not play wherever they believe is fit. He went on to establish that forcing the players to act as a ‘moral police’ is hypocritical and misdirecting. Nassar was strongly emphasizing that players must be free to choose where to play without much criticism.
