Novak Djokovic was unable to participate in the Indian Wells tournament, where he had won the title five times in the past, due to his unvaccinated status and the US government’s regulations for foreign travelers. It was announced on March 17th that Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the Miami Open due to the same reasons that caused him to miss the Indian Wells tournament.
Djokovic, a six-time winner at Miami Open, revealed in a recent interview that he is taking a constructive approach to the situation. Despite the setback, the 22-time Grand Slam champion stated that he chooses not to dwell on the past and has no regrets. He wishes to perform well at the Grand Slam tournaments rather than the ATP tours.
In a recent interview with CNN, he talked about wishing to play at the U.S. Open later this year. He said, “I really want to be playing there, want to be there. I actually had in 2021 when I lost in the finals against (Daniil) Medvedev, probably one of the best moments I ever had with the New York crowd. And I’ve been fortunate to win that tournament three times, play many finals.”
He further added, “And even though I lost that match, I received a lot of love and appreciation from people and I want to go back and I want to reconnect with the crowd there. So that’s something I’m looking forward to and hopefully, it will happen.”
Novak Djokovic focuses on the clay season ahead
Currently, Djokovic has shifted his attention toward the upcoming clay court season in Europe. Djokovic has won a total of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, which ties him with Rafael Nadal for the most in men’s tennis. Among his major wins, Djokovic has claimed victory twice at the French Open, which is the next major event on the tennis calendar.
Whether or not Novak Djokovic participates in this year’s US Open, his fans won’t have to wait long to see him compete again. Djokovic is anticipated to resume his 2023 tennis season on clay at the Monte Carlo Masters, which is scheduled to take place between April 9th and 16th.
Although Novak Djokovic shares the lead in the rankings of men’s Grand Slam singles titles, he is currently behind Serena Williams and Margaret Court on the all-time list. This is something Djokovic aims to alter this year, and he has expressed admiration for Williams’ remarkable accomplishment.
