World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the Paris Masters by 6-4, 6-3. This is a record-extending seventh title for the Serb at Bercy. While the Bulgarian put up a good fight, it was ultimately the Serb who came out successful. Nevertheless, it was a show of great talent from both parties.
Novak Djokovic has been in excellent form the whole season. With three Grand Slam titles in his bag this year alone, he has proven yet again that he is one of the best tennis players of all time.
The Serb has not participated in too many tournaments this season. He only made appearances at all four Grand Slams and three Masters events. However, he managed to win one of these three, where he defeated Carlos Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Masters. Despite having appeared in a limited number of tournaments, he still managed to snatch back his No. 1 position from Alcaraz.
Grigor Dimitrov, on the other hand, has also had a better season compared to previous years. He made a semi-final appearance at the Shanghai Masters, where he was defeated by Andrey Rublev. Nevertheless, ever since he was down by injury, the Bulgarian showed the tennis world that he was on the way to a comeback as he made great improvements in his game.
Nevertheless, both Novak Djokovic and Grigor Dimitrov proved that they were playing the best game they could. With a 36-year-old still at the top of his game and a former World No. 3 eager to prove that he still had it in him, the match was one for the books. Unfortunately, only one man can win. It happened to be the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s day in Paris this year.
Novak Djokovic’s week at Paris
The 24-time Grand Slam title champion does it again at the Paris Masters. However, he was met with a couple of tough quests on his route to the trophy. Barring his second-round match against Tomas Etcheverry, all other matches were three-setters. This shows the level of physical strength the Serb possesses.
In his quarterfinal, he was met by Holger Rune. While the Dane managed to defeat Djokovic in the final last year to claim his first and only Masters trophy, he could not produce the same result this year.
This match was quite grueling, with a set going to the tiebreaker. Ultimately, World No. 1 proved that he was more successful on the day. His semi-final against Andrey Rublev was not so easy either.
The semi-final was a tough one, with both players losing their breath through the duration of the match. The Serb also had some difficulty with his back, for which he requested on-court medical assistance. However, with the Russian making a match-point double fault, the game went into Djokovic’s bag. With that being said, there is no denying that the Serb had a tough but wonderful week at the Paris Masters.
