Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have been two of the most prominent players in the history of the sport of tennis. The way they played and approached the game for more than a decade has been nothing sort of extraordinary.

They, along with Rafael Nadal, colloquially known as the ‘Big Three’, have taken the sport to an all-new level. Comparisons have always been made between them by the tennis pundits and the players themselves.

Recently, through an Instagram post, Serena Williams‘ ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou explained the differences between Nole and Federer. He went on to compare them to soccer greats, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

I was talking to a friend of mine and we were saying that Federer is Messi and Djokovic is Ronaldo. Why? Because Federer is a talent, and he just needs to feel what he is doing. While Djokovic is a hard worker who pays attention to every single detail.

Mouratoglou also added that Djokovic’s hunger to always stay at the top makes him equivalent to that of Ronaldo’s. A few days earlier, Nick Kyrgios too made a distinction between the two. He called out Nole as the best player ever while calling Federer the most beautiful thing to watch and the most talented.

The era of ‘Big Three’ coming to an end?

After Roger Federer bid adieu to the game in 2022 during the Laver Cup, there have been speculations regarding the retirement of Nole and Nadal too. Rafa is struggling with injuries and has called out that this might be his last professional tennis season.

Nole is still at the top of his game at the age of 36. Still the World No.1 and is eying his 25th Grand Slam title in the Australian Open 2024.

However, the time is not far away, and, in a few years, the sport will be without three of its greatest players ever. Djokovic is currently in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, while Nadal is recovering for his recent injury.
