Everyone has their own way of attaining motivation. Everyone wants something to drive them to victory. It can be simply winning, being criticized or also just being looked at differently. However, Novak Djokovic has come up with a different way of feeling motivated.
Djokovic sparked controversy at the 2023 Roland Garros after his comment on the ongoing tensions between Kosovo and Serbia. The fans, the tennis federation, and French Sports Minister didn’t approve of Djokovic’s comments and wanted him not to repeat that.
When asked in his Press conference about his quotes, Djokovic firmly replied. He felt that people might disagree with him, but the truth is that the situation does exist. And he stands on one side of it with strong support. “Well, I don’t mind saying that. I mean, I would say it again, but I don’t need to because you have my quotes if you want to reflect on that. Of course I’m aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It’s something that I stand for. So that’s all.”
The Serb has made his intentions behind the camera message very clear; however, he will have to hold his horses and not repeat this. The officials have not approved of this. A repetition could invite disqualification. Djokovic has already once been disqualified before at the 2020 US Open. He had accidentally hit the lines umpire in frustration. It didn’t go well with the officials in New York, and the Serb had to make an untimely exit.

Controversy drives Novak Djokovic to achieve greatness

Novak Djokovic was also asked why doesn’t he desire a controversy-free Grand Slam. It has happened many times before that as soon as a Grand Slam starts, Djokovic is stuck in some off-field issue. May it be hitting the line umpire or not taking a vaccination. He may end up winning the Slam, but the talk of his issue is very much on. “You know, drama-free Grand Slam, I don’t think it can happen for me. I guess that drives me, as well.”
Well, Djokovic has taken this into his stride. He believes that it’s not possible for him not to have controversy. However, if he wants, he can convert that energy into a positive and apply it in his game. This is one of the reasons the Serb is so successful, as he can motivate himself from such dicey situations. He looks on course for another Slam here in Paris. Can he make it three in the French Capital?
