Novak Djokovic sees Matteo Berrettini as the ‘main threat’ for 2022 Wimbledon according to Greg Rusedski

Matteo Berrettini has made a stunning comeback from the wrist injury, winning both grass-court tournaments he has played before the Italian sets his eye on Wimbledon. Berrettini has hit the top form just in time for the Championships. He was the runner-up in Wimbledon 2021, losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets after taking the first. Berrettini has again emerged as one of the favorites to win at the SW19.
Djokovic on the other hand has not played in a single tournament after his quarterfinal loss to Rafael Nadal at the French Open 2022. The Serbian will play an exhibition tournament before heading to Wimbledon and though it might not be an accurate indicator of his current level, the Big Three have always been known to peak at the important moments to win the biggest titles. Greg Rusedski a former world number 4 feels that Djokovic is keeping a close eye on Berrettini.
Greg Rusedski believes Matteo Berrettini can make it to the finals again with a favorable draw.
Rudeski thinks that Djokovic would have watched Berrettini’s Queen’s club matches to check the form of one of the most dangerous players on grass. Rusedski said: “Djokovic will have watched this match.” “And he will have looked at it and seen where Berrettini is at because when you’re off the tour, you’re looking at who is going to be your main threat at the championships and he’s made a statement these last two weeks.”
About Berrettini’s chances at Wimbledon, Rusedski continued: “I think if he gets a favorable draw then there’s no doubt he can be in another Wimbledon final.” He also made note of some of the dangerous players lurking without seeding. He said, “There’s also the disruptor in Nick Kyrgios. He can’t win the title but he can beat, on his day, a Nadal or Djokovic in an early round match.”
Rusedski summarized by saying that if like the French Open 2022, where Nadal, Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev were in the top half, leaving the bottom half of the draw ripe for picking. If Berrettini gets the same luck, there are very few doubts about him making it to the final at SW19 and he also has a decent chance to win the title as well and is likely to be Djokovic’s main rival at 2022 Wimbledon.
