Novak Djokovic clinched his fourth US Open singles title on Sunday, defeating World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the finals. He won the face-off in straight sets against the 2021 champion. The 36-year-old had a fantastic run this year. He won three majors in 2023, which include the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Novak, along with the Men’s Basketball team, was greeted with great pomp and show by a humungous crowd of 50,000 fans.

Djokovic shattered several records this month with his title triumph. He played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium after a gap of two years. The Serb was denied entry to the United States last year on grounds of his vaccination status. Still, Novak managed to improve his performance and exacted his revenge on his Russian opponent, Medvedev, whom the Serb had lost to in 2021.

Novak Djokovic returned to the city of Belgrade, Serbia, to be welcomed by a crowd of 50,000 fans. Huge projectors were set up to display the scenes of the gathering as the 36-year-old made a grand entry along with the Men’s National Basketball team of Serbia. The World No. 2 was seen getting visibly emotional as he struggled to keep tears from streaming down his face. The members of the basketball team stood by his side as they consoled him.

The Men’s Basketball team of Serbia won Silver for the country in their latest match at the FIBA campaign. Although they missed the gold, returning home as runners up was quite an accomplishment for the team as they reached the finals this year without the 2 time NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic.

Djokovic showed off the 2023 US Open Championship trophy, the latest addition to his collection of 24 Grand Slams. He bowed down to his fans in order to express his gratitude as the crowd cheered a teared-up Novak, chanting his name and waving the Serbian flag. Posting a clip from the celebrations in Belgrade, a user wrote “emocije” on X (formerly Twitter), which is the Serbian for “emotions”.

With his victory at the last Grand Slam of the year, Novak Djokovic has set several new records. He became the oldest person ever to win the US Open, a record earlier held by Ken Rosewall, who won the championship at the age of 35 in 1970. He is also the man with the most Grand Slam Majors to his name. The Serb broke Serena Williams‘ record of 23 majors and now ties Margaret Court with his all-time record of 24 major singles in the Open Era.

The 36-year-old beat Roger Federer‘s record earlier with his win against Taylor Fritz to reach his 47th Grand Slam semi-final. His 2023 appearance in the finals of the Flushing Meadows Tournament marked his tenth time reaching the finals of the tournament. Djokovic is also the first man ever to win three major titles in the same year on four occasions: 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023.
