Novak Djokovic began this year’s Wimbledon with his eyes set on a fifth successive title. The Serb has been absolutely splendid until now, winning both the first-round and second-round matches without dropping a single set. He beat Pedro Cachin in the first match by 6-3, 6-3, 7-6, and now in the second round, he has gone past Australia’s Jordan Thompson by 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
However, interestingly, the second-round match was well away from a clear victory for the Serbian. He was tested to the limits by the Australian, and the crowd also played its part. The first set was easy for Novak, who never really gave Thompson a chance to come back. The Australian played wonderful tennis to take the second set to the tiebreaker. The crowd was absolutely up in their seats, with the majority rooting for Jordan to put the second set to his name.
But as it has been for the past couple of years, Djokovic performs better when the odds are against him. Yet again, the tennis sensation responded to his haters in fine fashion, wrapping up the match in straight sets and celebrating by pointing to his head, giving the fans an indication of his mentality.
He later talked about this incident with his wife and children saying, “It’s incredible how they provoke me (the public). So they don’t understand. They don’t realize it makes me even stronger!”
Why is Djokovic always booed during the Wimbledon Championships?
Novak Djokovic has always been the second fan favorite at Wimbledon, irrespective of the opponent he is facing or the run of form he is on. He has received a lot of boos from the stands all these years. However, despite that, he has been proving his haters wrong through his impressive mentality on the pitch and his hunger to strive for better every time.
There is absolutely no reason to as why the fans consider him the second best with some saying that is way too aggressive and overconfident but a player of his stature can never shy away from having these qualities. In the 2019 Wimbledon final, the Serb faced intense pressure from fans when he faced none other than Roger Federer, but in the end, he had the last laugh. Notably, the same was the case when he was up against Thompson in the second round yesterday.
