Novak Djokovic vocalized that thinking about a US Open final match-up against Carlos Alcaraz would disrespect other opponents in the pre-tournament presser. In the past year, tennis fans have been treated to heated matches against these two players. In these matches, both players have emerged equally successful.

“I think it’s also in a way disrespectful to your next opponent if you’re already thinking about your finals matchup,” said the 23-time Grand Slam winner, as he justified not thinking about a finals match this early into the tournament. Even though Djokovic has proved audiences to be very successful in his endeavors, and this could excuse him to plan for a final, this type of thinking doesn’t resonate with the Serb.

Both Novak and Carlos have big goals for this US Open. While the Spaniard aims to defend his crown at Flushing Meadows, Djokovic’s goals are set at a much higher step. With a victory at the US Open, Djokovic will become the first player to win 24 Slams in the Open Era. He will be marching past American Serena Williams in doing so.

Both players have frequented the finals stage against each other. The last five Grand Slam titles have been split between the two. Between two Grand Slam finals and two Masters 1000 finals last year, both players have won equally.

With the rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz is heating up now more that ever, the Serb revealed that he has never played an opponent like Alcaraz before. “He’s basically got the best of all three worlds,” said Djokovic after his Wimbledon loss, comparing Alcaraz’s game to that of the Big-3.

Djokovic has also affirmed that Alcaraz’s game consists of certain elements from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and himself. Alcaraz has always been compared to them, especially fellow Spaniard Rafa Nadal.

With the retirement of Federer and Nadal being out on account of injury, people have started anticipating the rivalry between Alcaraz and Djokovic. Some fans have even coined the new term “Big-2”.
